This is a piece submitted by Emily Davenport–Development Coordinator–and Colleen Rials–Administrative & Operations Assistant; both are with Louisiana Arts and Science Museum (LASM). Together they have been spearheading the museum’s Sensory Inclusivity programming, with Emily focusing on Sensory Sundays & Colleen working with KultureCity®.  The article was submitted for our spring 2025 newsletter's focus on "All Things Sensory"--a sampling of the secret menu of sensory perks by individuals, organizations, and businesses found in the Baton Rouge area.

The Louisiana Art & Science Museum (LASM) is proud to announce our partnership with KultureCity®, the world’s leading nonprofit for accessibility and acceptance. LASM is one of only two KultureCity® Sensory Inclusive™ Certified locations in Baton Rouge. More than 90% of our staff has completed training to better support visitors with sensory sensitivities.

Sensory Second Sunday – A Calming and Inclusive Experience

Sensory Second Sunday (of every month) is designed to create a museum experience that is quieter, calmer, more predictable, and more sensory friendly. From 3-5 pm, we dim bright lights, lower background music, and keep sound levels consistent to create a more peaceful environment. Planetarium shows in the Irene W. Pennington Planetarium are captioned and played at a reduced volume. We also provide weighted lap blankets to borrow, offering a sense of security and helping to reduce anxiety during the show.

How to Prepare for Sensory Second Sunday

If you are planning a visit, the KultureCity® website and app provide a Social Story that walks you through what to expect at LASM. Many guests find this helpful in reducing the stress of visiting a new place. Available at the front desk to check out are free Sensory Bags, which contain noise-reducing headphones, strobe-reduction glasses, fidget tools, and visual cue cards to assist with communication and navigation. We allow visitors to bring their own familiar items from home.

Why Sensory Second Sunday Matters

Everyone deserves the opportunity to explore, learn, and engage in a space that feels welcoming, comfortable, and accessible. For some visitors, a traditional museum setting can be overwhelming due to bright lights, loud sounds, and unpredictable changes. Sensory Second Sunday ensures that individuals who experience sensory sensitivities can visit LASM in an environment that meets their needs. This program is particularly helpful for autistic individuals who may need a structured, low-stimulation experience. Families and caregivers looking for a more relaxed and flexible environment can also benefit from this program. By making small but intentional adjustments, we create a more inclusive experience where everyone feels supported and at ease.

Expanding Accessibility at LASM

We now have Quiet Zones available year-round, providing a calm, low-stimulation space where visitors can take a break if needed including several sensory pea pods available. These inflatable, cocoon-like seats provide gentle pressure, creating a soothing, enclosed space that can help with relaxation and self-regulation. Visitors are welcome to use them at their own pace throughout the event.

Training is another essential part of our accessibility efforts. We are committed to continuous education for our staff, ensuring they understand how to assist guests and can provide the best possible support. We will continue partnering with KultureCity® and other accessibility-focused organizations to stay informed about best practices and new ways to improve our visitor experience.

We value input from our visitors and encourage feedback on how we can make LASM more inclusive and welcoming. If you have suggestions, specific needs, or ideas for additional accommodation, we invite you to share them with our team.

Visit LASM Anytime

Although Sensory Second Sunday happens once a month, LASM is committed to providing an inclusive and accessible experience year-round. We want every visitor to feel comfortable exploring our galleries, exhibitions, and planetarium shows at any time. Sensory needs do not follow a schedule, so our accessibility resources are available every day the museum is open.

We encourage families, individuals, and caregivers to join us for a stress-free museum visit!
